Big ACC coaching swap continues as Brinkman heads to Boston College

Each NCAA offseason brings a number of coaching changes to the nation’s top swimming and diving programs, but it’s rare that we see so many in a single conference.
Since the end of the 2021-22 season in March, there has been a lot of turnover in ACC coaching, and in many cases replacements have come in from rival programs.
The latest came earlier this week, when it was announced that the former Notre Dame aide Joe Brinkman was taking over as Boston College’s new head coach.
The turnover at Notre Dame was in many ways the catalyst for all of these intra-ACC coaching changes.
The Irish have started looking for a new leader this offseason after the former head coach Mike Litzinger resigned at the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
In April, it was announced that Notre Dame had appointed Chris Lindauer as the team’s new head coach, coming from foe ACC Louisville.
Lindauer eventually brought in another coach from Lousiville, Kameron Chastainto join him at the UND, and he also hired Kelsi Dahliaa legendary Cardinals swimmer who was just days away from announcing her competitive retirement.
Two other ACC coaches also joined Lindauer with Notre Dame, Trevor Carroll of Pittsburgh and Josh Stanfield of Duke.
As Lindauer built his new staff at Notre Dame, two former Irish coaches remained in the conference, with Brinkman’s move to the Eagles being the latest. The other was a former UND associate Aaron Bell– who resigned at the same time as Litzinger – who joined the Louisville staff after the departures of Lindauer and Chastain.
Another movement to note within the conference is Athena Millerwho is moving to Florida State as an associate head coach after previously holding that position with Pitt.
Intra-ACC coaching changes, 2022 offseason
- Louisville to Notre Dame
- Pitt at Notre Dame
- Duke at Notre-Dame
- Notre Dame in Louisville
- Notre Dame at Boston College
- Pitt at Florida State
*Dahlia was not a coach in Louisville, but she would have had a job waiting for her if she wanted her status in the program.
With so many conference coaches knowing each other well, this could set up some interesting recruiting battles as ACC teams vie for position and status in the years to come.
It should also be noted that the head coach of Virginia Todd DeSorbo also came from another ACC program when he was let go in 2017, joining the Cavs from NC State.
