Chatham Swap Shops Struggle With Unacceptable Items | Archives
PITTSBORO – After reopening on April 19, Chatham County’s collection center swap shops have been overrun with items that are not acceptable.
“Swap Shops are a place where residents can leave and take lightly worn items, so that someone else can use them and they don’t have to be thrown into a landfill,” said Kevin Lindley. , Chatham County Environmental Quality Manager. “Since the reopening, residents have been placing items in exchange stores that are not acceptable, from garbage bags to oversized items. We want to take this opportunity to remind residents what items are and are not accepted at exchange stores as it has been difficult for our attendants to try to manage.
The following items are NOT accepted at exchange stores:• Items too large to fit in the Exchange Shop or for one person (which would include large furniture, building materials, etc.)
• Adult material
• Chemicals or cleaners
• Dirty, torn or wet clothes (these can be put in the green clothes recycling bin)
• food or drink
• mattress (bed, futon, sofa bed) or box springs
• Medicines or medical devices
• To paint
• Personal care products
• Televisions over 25 inches or electronic devices weighing over 50 pounds

• Clothing and shoes
• Furniture (small)
• Housewares and decorations
