Lady Toppers remains league-perfect with 2-1 win over Middle Tennessee
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A week after the start of the United States conference, WKU Soccer leads the league table with six points after a 2-1 win over Middle Tennessee on Sunday night in Bowling Green. The Lady Toppers are 2-0-0 in C-USA and improve to 7-1-0 this season with the win.
“We already knew that, but every game in the conference will be hotly contested,” said head coach Jason neidell. “There is a lot of parity in our league and there are a lot of good teams. It’s always a challenge every day, no matter who your opponent is, to get three points and one W.”
It was WKU’s third consecutive victory over Middle Tennessee, giving the Lady Toppers a 9-6-6 advantage in the series.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, but WKU had several chances. The Lady Toppers outscored the Blue Raiders 9-7 in the half and scored three shots on goal.
WKU hit the first in the 68th minute from a corner. Brina Michel took the corner for WKU and placed the ball inside the box to Sydney Ernst. Ernst fired from close range, but the Blue Raider goalkeeper pushed him back. The balloon went up in the air and Lyric schmidt found it and directed it into the goal.
The Lady Toppers’ second goal came from a penalty after a strikeout by Middle Tennessee. Avery jacobsen took the kick for WKU and sent it for his third goal of the season. The Blue Raiders avoided the shutout with a goal in the 89th minute, âsaid Neidell.
âI thought we were knocking on the door a bit in the second half and it seemed like it was only a matter of time. We kept working hard and fighting and scratching and good things happened to us.
It was Schmidt’s first career goal as Lady Topper. Jacobsen is now tied for first in points for the team with eight of three goals and two assists.
The Lady Toppers return to action on Friday, September 24 at UAB at 7 p.m. ET. WKU will be back home on Saturday, October 2 against Rice at 7 p.m. ET.
