Watch Hummer Electric trade with its engine for the first time
What can you do if you want an electric Hummer but don’t want to pay or wait for the new one that’s launched under the GMC brand? Well you can make your own obviously like the famous YouTuber JerryRigAll (real name Zack Nelson) who is already well advanced with the creation of his own Hummer EV.
He started with a military-type Humvee that was taken apart and the plan was to have an electric motor and a battery from a Tesla Model X. When it came to finding a motor, Zack went with one that is. out of one of those vehicles you see jets moving around airports – they are known as tugs or push back tractors.
So far, three videos in this series have been released, the latest being the one in which the electric motor is mounted in the vehicle via laser cut mounting brackets. In fact, even though the title of the last video focuses on the laser part, Zack actually finished a lot of the project by the end.
This series is not only interesting because it is about a first generation Hummer which is converted to run on electrons, but also because you can see some of the interesting engineering solutions of the vehicle. For example, you can access the engine compartment from the passenger compartment (as you will be able to do in Bollinger vehicles). The brakes are also unusual as they are on the inside and believe it or not the whole structure is aluminum.
Now, while this is mostly a DIY job, Zack admits the project will definitely cost him a pretty penny considering its scale (and the actual size of the vehicle). Will it cost it over $ 100,000 to come close to the cost of an all-new GMC Hummer EV? We’ll have to keep watching this series of videos to find out.
