WMU Football Adds Ohio State, Drops Cincy for 2024; school net swap $ 1.3 million
West Michigan football trades one Ohio power for another.
The Broncos will travel to play at Ohio State in 2024, making room on the schedule by canceling a scheduled home game with Cincinnati.
The contract will void an entire home series with Cincinnati, which was scheduled to host Western Michigan in 2020. That game has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
By making the exchange, Western Michigan will receive $ 1.8 million from the state of Ohio. After paying Cincinnati a buyout of $ 500,000, WMU will bring in $ 1.3 million. The Broncos have adjusted their sports budget since before COVID-19 hit in the spring of 2020.
A date for the 2024 game has not been announced, but it will likely be Saturday, September 7, given that it is a joint opening for western Michigan and the state of Ohio.
WMU also plays Wisconsin on August 31 and Marshall on September 14 that season. In 2024, the Ohio State will host southern Mississippi on August 31 and travel to Washington on September 14. The WMU game would be the Buckeyes’ third and final non-conference game in 2024, now that the Big Ten are playing a nine-game schedule. .
In the current AP poll, Cincinnati is ranked fifth and Ohio State is ranked seventh.
The WMU-Ohio State meeting will be second overall, with the Buckeyes winning, 38-12, in Columbus in 2015.
Western Michigan is also looking to secure additional Michigan dates, with the next possibly slated for 2026. The teams opened the 2021 season against each other, with the Wolverines winning, 47-14.
